Paul McNamara, Partner in HR Executive Search, says a lack of commercial experience is creating a drought of strong HR business partners with the right skillsets to help drive a business forward.

He warns that there is an increasing “black hole” of commercial skills and financial expertise, as today’s HR professionals instead choose career routes such as talent management and organisational development.

Paul wants to see more organisations and HR Directors encouraging in-house talent to become more commercially focused, gaining real financial acumen and understanding how a business makes its money. Only then, he says, will the title of HR Business Partner earn the respect it deserves.

“The UK was the strongest economy in the G7 in 2014 and there is growth of 2.4% forecast in 2015. Unemployment is set to fall this year and half a million new jobs will be created in 2015. With this backdrop we are seeing confidence return to the market. Eton Bridge Partners’ search division recorded its best quarter to date in Q1 of 2015 and our number of interim managers on assignment has increased 35% year on year. Although certain clients, particularly in the energy sector, are cautious in their recruitment plans we are generally seeing positivity in the market, and the outlook appears strong for the short and medium term.”
